The Role of Nuclear Power Plants for the Implementation of CF100

As part of the global effort to address climate change, countries aiming for carbon neutrality are adopting various strategies. One such strategy involves the adoption of the Carbon Free 100%(CF100) concept, which enhances and complements the existing RE100 campaign, especially by including nuclear power generation. Major countries around the world are striving to achieve CF100, and are adopting diverse strategies for this purpose. It is evident that each country is adopting different approaches based on their energy scenarios, economic conditions, and environmental factors. Nuclear power generation is considered a key component for achieving carbon neutrality as a carbon-free energy source, contributing to the decarbonization of power grids. It can also act as a stable source of power supply, complementing the variability of renewable energies such as solar and wind. Overall, the successful implementation of CF100 requires the significant role of nuclear power generation, necessitating international cooperation and technical and policy support. The harmonious use of various carbon-free energy sources, including nuclear power generation, appears to be crucial in responding to climate change and achieving carbon neutrality. Korea should expeditiously establish a CF100 implementation system and become a leading player in achieving a completely decarbonized society by 2050 through international collaboration.
